After a 13-year hiatus, Deadwood returned to HBO in the form of a film. The third season ended with some closure in 2006, but the lack of a series finale loomed over an otherwise-fantastic show's legacy. One of the best written shows to grace television brought back the vast majority of actors from the original series for a last hurrah. Finally, Deadwood: The Movie is a bittersweet conclusion to David Milch's Western.
In January, HBO answered its biggest question mark of the year with the return of a series in need of a rebound. Thankfully, the new True Detective is good again. Led by Mahershala Ali, the show is recapturing its magic with a similar story arc that made season one successful. True Detective is not the only show in the premium channel’s powerhouse year. HBO’s 2019 lineup will offer an incredible list of must-see TV.
It is no secret that HBO is synonymous with compelling characters. Two of the premium channel’s mid-year shows just aired their finales in consecutive weeks. Both series, Insecure and Ballers, induced major character shifts this year. Only Insecure succeeded in stretching its plot well, but both changes are examples of HBO’s unique storytelling.
