The nominations for the 2020 Academy Awards are in. The most prestigious awards ceremony in cinema is primed to celebrate a year of instant classics. A-listers like Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, and Tom Hanks are up for awards alongside Oscar newcomers like Cynthia Erivo, Florence Pugh, and Bong Joon Ho. Without further ado, here are my predictions for every Oscar category this year:
It is natural to say “oh, they sound like…” when dissecting a new artist. That is difficult to do with Another Sky. The U.K. art rockers have a unique sound that is not like much else. Their music begins with the singular range of singer Catrin Vincent, but is a collaborative brilliance that cannot be ignored.
Large scale intimacy may seem like a contradiction, but Sam Mendes achieves that rare blend in 1917. The director saturates his film's audience in the horrors of World War One using a rare single-shot narrative. Because of this choice, 1917 is more of a psychological thriller than a traditional war movie. It is also the best epic to emerge from a year of instant classic tales like The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
