I will try to approach the next eleven months with an open mind, but my favorite album of 2019 might have been released just eighteen days into the year. Singer-songwriter Steve Gunn’s The Unseen In Between is an incredible record that I can’t stop listening to.
The Oscar nominations for the 2019 Academy Awards were announced today. There were a few surprises and snubs, but overall most of the nominations went as expected. More posts will follow as I catch up on a few films, but here are my ten initial thoughts on the 2019 Oscars:
Six years ago, Dave Grohl released his documentary Sound City on January 31, 2013. The film was not only notable for its exploration of the famous Van Nuys studio's history, but for its soundtrack. In some instances, the Sound City soundtrack tied into work that was created in the studio. In others, it was just an excuse to bring great performers together.
Last week I caught the end of a great new song as I was flipping from station to station on my way home from work. I had no idea what the rest of the track was, but its rush of guitars and anthemic reach made me want to listen to everything from this new band. Just like Milo Green last November, the last few notes of Starcrawler’s “Hollywood Ending” were enough to hook me.
After years of fighting the urge to subscribe to another streaming service, I finally signed up for Amazon Prime in December. Two early binges of Amazon content revealed that Prime's exclusives trump Hulu and rival Netflix. With a trove of films and series like A League Of Their Own and The Lord Of The Rings in development, it will be hard to unsubscribe.
Whether it is The Rolling Stones at Lincoln Financial Field or The Hives at Franklin Music Hall, there are a lot of great bands playing in Philadelphia in 2019. Here are some of the best Philly indie and rock concerts to look forward to this year:
Clint Eastwood has a knack for choosing unusual projects. His latest, The Mule, is certainly something unique to the big screen. The true story of a 90-year-old drug trafficker is one of the more original film concepts of 2018. Even though the script falls short in developing worth secondary stories, Eastwood himself makes The Mule stand out with a stellar late-career performance.
I spent a lot of time in movie theaters in 2018. Whether it was Ocean’s 8 or A Star Is Born, there were a lot of movies that tried to tell memorable stories. Not every film succeeded. Many stood as platforms for terrific acting performances, but came up short as art and entertainment. All made for a great collective experience as a moviegoer.
