Review: Metaspion’s Folktronika Schmolkfonika

Just when it seems like contemporary music could not invent any more genres or subgenres, a new blend of sounds breaks down that delusion. That is especially true of Metaspion, who is putting a Scandinavian spin on a blend of folk rock and electronic music. Metaspion released his debut album Folktronika Schmolkfonika on June 8.

Josh Homme And Anthony Bourdain On No Reservations

Last Friday television host, author, and chef Anthony Bourdain passed away in France. Bourdain was a big music fan. He featured musicians like Iggy Pop, Marky Ramone, and Alice Cooper on his show. One musician who he forged a bond with through his television work was Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age. Homme composed music for Bourdain’s No Reservations and appeared on the program.

Free Concerts In The Philadelphia Area

There are so many great places to catch free concerts in the Philadelphia area in 2018. I started the season with the West Philly Porchfest, a great DIY neighborhood music festival. Other events on the 2018 summer concert calendar contains a diverse list of locations and bands that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and musical tastes. Here are some of the best spots to catch free concerts in the Philadelphia area this year:

A Star Is Born Trailer Reaction: Oscar Glory For Lady Gaga

Warner Brothers released the trailer for the Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga movie A Star Is Born yesterday. The film will be the third remake of a 1937’s A Star Is Born and is Cooper’s directorial debut. If the trailer is any indication, this will be an immensely popular movie that generates considerable Oscar buzz.

Review: Pale Blue Dot’s Anatomy

Over the last 30 years, Charlottesville, Virginia has been home to a few artists with an ability to create memorable music. Members of the Dave Matthews Band, Maxine Jones (En Vogue), and Steven Malkmus (Pavement) have all called the city home at one point. Another intriguing group of musicians from Charlottesville, Pale Blue Dot, recently put out the album Anatomy.

Review: N.ave’s Black Magic EP

On April 24 Philadelphia-area hip-hop artist N.ave released Black Magic. The four-song EP flaunts blunt lyrics backed by catchy production. Black Magic is N.ave's first record of 2018 and second release from within the past year.

Music Monday: Florence + the Machine Cover Fleetwood Mac

Florence + the Machine are going to release a new album at the end of the month. Before the U.K. band begins to circulate new music, this is a great time to look back at a gem from their early career. In 2010 Florence + the Machine covered Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” and revealed how well they can unleash an epic moment.

The 2018 West Philly Porchfest

Saturday was a good day to be a mail carrier in West Philadelphia. You could walk from block-to-block and listen as a wealth of music enlivened city streets on a muggy summer day. The 2018 West Philly Porchfest was in full swing and the City of Brotherly Love sounded great.

Supergirl and Positive Change

At first, I was doubtful that this series could retain my interest due to the seemingly two-dimensional positivity of its title character. Audiences look for authenticity, not a forced look at the sunshine to blind themselves to reality around them. As the show progressed, I realized that the show championed finding positivity within the ever-present changes of an authentic life with no blinders. So how does this work within the world of Supergirl?
